You asked about what app to deploy. I suggest keeping it simple. Use the RailsBridge (AKA DevChix) Curriculum and the Rails Tutorial. Links to these can be found in the description of the Working Session meetups.
Doug Goldie's wise advice is turn the crank a half dozen times on little toy projects, then dive into a more complex app.
At future meetups, we will have people pitch small apps and look for collaborators - by then you might be one of them.
